Small Business Web Design

As you may or may not know, a web site can do many things for your small business. For starters it can advertise your small business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It gets better, you get all that advertising for your small monthly hosting fee (usually between $14 and $25).

Another great way to use your small business web site is to drive traffic to it through mailers. (See our Graphic Design section to learn about direct mailers and how affordably we can create a marketing campaign for your small business.)

The information below will help you structure your thoughts and gather information for your new small business web design. We encourage you to call us with any questions or concerns you may have. We will not only build your small business web site, we'll create scenarios you might not have considered to help you bring your business to its full potential.

What will be the purpose of your small business web site?

Ask yourself this question and think about what it is you want your web site to do for you. This will determine the type of web site we build for you. Not all web sites are created equally. If your business depends on your web site ranking well in search engines, your web site will be designed around this concept. If your web site needs to sell product, then your web site will be designed to sell products effectively.

Organize your web site's content

This will help you understand what you need to do and content you need to create as well as get your message across to us. If you don't know where to begin, look at your competition with a critical eye. See what they're doing and how you can do it better. At the very least, you need to tell your web site visitors who you are, what you're offering, why your products are superior to your competition and how to get in touch with you.

Once you've figured out what content you need, create a site map. The image below will illustrate how best to lay out your site map. Keep in mind you should be able to navigate to any page from any page in your web site. The easier it is for a user to navigate your site and find the content they need, the longer they're going to stay, which means the better opportunity you have of making a sale.

Now start writing content. Save your web site content in either a Word document or a simple text file. Your web designer will need some sort of text file to copy and paste your content into your web site.

Look and Feel/Design

Spend some time online looking at web sites you like. What do you like about them? The design? The colors? The navigation? Save these web sites' addresses – at least three – and give them to your web designer. This way they will know exactly what you're looking for.

With this information, you're ready to start looking for a web site designer for your small business. You'll get exactly what you need and your designer will appreciate the preparation work you've put into the project.
