Web Design Basics
What is a web site? Well if you're reading this, you probably already know. What we're going to show you here is what makes up a web site, how a web site works and what goes into a professionally designed web site.
The World Wide Web - For starters it wouldn't be possible to own a web site if it wasn't for this thing called the world wide web. The web consists of billions of web pages (also called web sites) residing on servers (powerful computers) which use an http protocol (hypertext transfer protocol) which allow users to access these pages.
Hosting - A hosting company owns servers, which are powerful computers connected to the internet (world wide web) 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Along with providing you a place to store your web site so anyone in the world can have access to it, a good host also provides security and backup systems to keep your web site available 99.99% of the time.
Hosting fees - A host collects hosting fees for providing their hosting services to you. Hosting fees can range from $5 on up to hundreds of dollars per month depending on the services provided.
Warning - be very cautious who you choose to host with. A bad host can cause your web site to be very ineffective. If the price seems too good to be true, then it probably is. The average small to medium size web site should cost anywhere from $15 to $25 per month depending on your web site's technology requirements.
A bad host can create an unfriendly search engine environment which will cause your site to be skipped over when search engines crawl the web for web pages to store in their database.
A trick many host providers are doing these days is cramming hundreds of web sites onto one server which makes accessing your web site on this busy server a very timely process. As you know, a slow loading site is passed up with the click of a button. Many things can contribute to a slow loading site. A bad host provider will make accessing your web site that much more difficult.
Web Design - The basics of a good web design consist of three things: good navigation, design and content. Use these three things as a guide for your web site and you'll be starting off on the right foot.
Navigation - A good web design starts with a good navigation system. If users struggle to navigate your web site, they won't be staying long. Think of your web site as a phone book. Users should be able to find information in your web site as easy as it is to find your local web designer in the Yellow Pages.
Design - It never ceases to amaze what businesses will pass off as a company web site. You wouldn't pitch your company on coffee-stained stationery that's been sitting on your desk for the past week would you? Of course not. So why put your logo on a web site that reflects poorly on your company?
